Hella Jongerius is a Dutch designer. She studied at the Academy for Industrial Design in Eindhoven. After graduating she created her design studio, Jongeriuslab, in 1993. Today, her main claim to fame is her deft fusion of industry and craftwork, which results in designs that incorporate traditional aesthetics with contemporary flair. “Bovist“, the multi-purpose object which can serve as a floor cushion, a stool or an ottoman features largescale embroidery, inspired by many different references.
The “Lacemaker” version, for example, is a take on “The Laceworker” by Johannes Vermeer. The original craftwork is seamlessly integrated into an industrially sound piece of furniture.
Her work has been shown in museums and galleries around the world, notably the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Galerie Kreo in Paris. She has produced furniture and design pieces for clients such as Belux and Vitra as well as Ikea.
