Netflix’s Hit Man Outfits: Glen Powell and Adria Arjona’s World of Lies, Deceit and Stylish Looks
Already slated to be one of summer’s big blockbuster hits long before making it to streaming platform Netflix, Richard Linklater’s romantic black comedy Hit Man (2023) has it all. Full of dark thrills, undeniable sexual tension and plenty of laughs, along with the big philosophical questions. Yet leading man, and rising star, Glen Powell shows us that it takes brains, braun and a wardrobe brimming with plenty of unique Hit Man outfits to become a world-class “undercover” assassin, like Gary Johnson.
Who is Gary Johnson with his Geek-Chic Look
Well simply put he is the straight-laced professor with a secret part-time job moonlighting as a hit man for the New Orleans Police Department.
With the remarkable tale of our “fake” assassin actually based on a true story, told by Skip Hollandsworth in his Texas Monthly article, Hit Man. It turns out Gary Johnson with his geek-chic style is just a simple man with a knack for connecting with people, and embodying their fantasy hitmen.
Gary Johnson’s Plaid Shirts and Limited Edition Antique Gold Wolcott Eyeglasses
Glen Powell is a long way from his suave and charming Anyone But You character Ben and his will they, won’t they relationship with the stylish Bea (steal here looks here). Instead Gary Johnson the unassuming, lonely professor with two cats has a casual geek-chic wardrobe of Hit Man outfits full of beige plaid shirts.
Whether it is a short sleeved button-up with the academic staple check pattern or a relaxed oversized polo shirt, you have to stick with the drab beiges tones to really steal Gary’s look.
Glen Powell’s Simple yet Dull Pants as College Professor Gary Johnson in Hit Man
It will likely come as no surprise to anyone that to finish off his beige plaid polos and button-up shirts, costume designer Juliana Hoffpauir has added equally dull and drab matching beige chinos and oversized loose-fitting light blue washed-out jeans.
More comfortable at home alone with his menagerie of cats, birds and house plants, Gary’s Hit Man outfits reflect his simple public facing life as an academic, loner. But it isn’t long before the lines start to blur between Gary, and his collection of deadly hitmen characters.
Who is your Hit Man?
Gary is good at his undercover hitman work because he knows how to connect with his customers, bringing out their fantasy of what they imagine a hitman to be. So now it’s time to pick your poison. Which of Gary’s alter ego’s is your Hit Man?
Helloween Hit Man Costume: Dean (Glen Powell) the Orange Wearing Sociopathic Serial Killer
Probably the most unhinged, and most likely to be everywhere this Halloween, Dean with his red hair, freckles and missing eyebrows is an unnerving sight to behold. He might not have much screen time, but his mismatched orange toned Hit Man outfit, made up of black Doc Martens, tan brown hunting pants and a vintage Category 5 work jacket certainly leaves a lasting impression.
Leather Coat Wearing Russian Hitman Nico
Nico, with his Matrix looks and Russian accent, has a more typical hitman feel to his wardrobe than the others. Sticking with dark and mysterious colors and durable fabrics, Gary Johnson as Nico wears a gray sherpa lined leather trench coat over simple black pants, a black roll neck sweater and matching leather gloves.
Glen Powell as Southern Alpha Tanner
When it comes to the Southern alpha that is Tanner, it isn’t just all about the Glen Powell Hit Man outfits, there are his accessories, take control attitude and numerous dodgy tattoos to take into account too. Including his camouflage skull cap and blue mirrored lens sunglasses, just like these Alpina Tri-Scray 2.0 HR glasses that are almost a perfect match to Tanners.
Glen Powell as Gary Johnson as X with their Take on American Psycho
Mr “You don’t need to know my name” X might give you a good old case of deja vu, but you aren’t imagining it Gary Johnson really did base his most self-righteous, smug and self-important hitman on Patrick Bateman from American Psycho (get our dress-up guide here). Right down to the sharp, perfectly tailored navy blue pinstripe suit, crisp white shirt and scarlet red tie with its silver tie clip.
Glen Powell as Gary Johnson’s Alter Ego Ron
But it’s when Gary’s alter ego lone wolf Ron meets the beautiful and desperate Madison, that things start to go wrong for the fake hitman. Getting caught-up in her tales of a dangerous husband that she wants killed before the same fate befalls her.
With a sleek, sexiness to Ron, gone is Gary’s drab beige color palette replaced by smoldering blacks, grays and dark greens. Out are the plaid patterned shirts as well, replaced in Rons Hit Man outfits with equally simple dark henley shirts and black tank tops with snug figure-hugging silhouettes.
Yet it’s Ron’s dark olive green suede trucker jacket with its contrast brown leather cuffs, collar and hem edge that is his standout Hit Man look. And an easy piece to replicate to add a little bit of Ron’s alpha male confidence into your own closet.
Adria Arjona’s Hit Man Outfits as Madison “Maddy” Masters
It doesn’t take long before the sparks are flying between the beautiful and scared Maddy Masters, played by Adria Arjona, and Gary Johnson’s alpha male alter ego Ron. But what if Maddy is playing Gary at his own game, putting on a fantasy for him, and watching the con man ultimately get conned.
An inside look at the making of Netflix’s Hit Man.
Adria Arjona’s Urban Outfitters Ava Cami as Maddy Masters in Hit Man
It isn’t just Maddy’s life and personality that falls somewhere between a femme fatale and damsel in distress, with her Hit Man outfits reflecting exactly the same. With the distressed wife quickly falling head over heels for her “fake” hitman, her white Urban Outfitters cami top is definitely more woman in peril. Especially with its soft, delicate crochet and lace detailing mirroring Maddy’s sweet and demure side.
Maddy Master’s Slinky Red Silk Slip Dress
With Maddy and Ron’s romantic entanglement as much built on lies as role-playing, it is little surprise that she chose a sexy red silk slip dress for their lust-fueled date. The slinky fabric, shimmering under her black leather jacket, while managing to effortlessly cling to every one of her curves.
But that was nothing compared to her air hostess costume that she wore especially for Ron…
Adria Adrjona’s Denim Co-Ord Hit Man Outfit as Maddy Masters
When it comes to Maddy Master’s Hit Man outfits, there is one look in particular that has real fashionista potential, and that is this two-piece denim co-ord. Made-up of a strappy cropped dark indigo denim bralet, with colorful button closures, and a matching pair of jeans, she is a sight for sore eyes. Although I’m not sure the revolver really adds much to the style stakes.
Where the real “fake” hitman’s story ends, with him turning down his Madison insisting she take her money and run, Gary or is it Ron’s story was only just beginning. The perfect place to start a tale full of clever lies, dark thrills and a sexual tension that kept us glued to our screens almost as much as the wardrobe department with the Hit Man outfits.
With something for everyone, the only question left to answer is if you have decided “Who is your hitman?”
