Who is Leatherface?

Leatherface is a murderous fictional character from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre film series created by Kim Henkel and Tobe Hooper. Alongside his family of mass murderers and cannibals, this deranged killer kidnaps, murders, and eats random travellers who venture near their ranch in Texas. His name, “Leatherface,” comes from his masks made of human skin.

His weapon of choice is a chainsaw. The idea of using the chainsaw as a murder weapon first came to director Tobe Hooper while he was in the hardware section of a busy store, contemplating how to speed his way through the crowd.  Hooper has also admitted that Leatherface was largely inspired by real-life serial killer and cannibal Ed Gein, who also wore masks made of human skin.

The exhausting and erratic atmosphere of the film comes from the grueling shooting conditions. The actor who played Leatherface, Gunnar Hansen, had to wear the same clothes for the entire shoot and became sickened by the stench.

Leatherface costume and accessories

To embody this horrifying killer, first slip on a relatively normal outfit: a white striped shirt, a blue tie, and blue jeans, along with some cowboy boots. Then slip on a bloody apron and grab your chainsaw…

For added realism, invest in a bag of fake blood and cover the chainsaw in it so it looks like you’ve just finished disembowelling one of your victims.

Of course, no Leatherface costume would be complete without his famous mask. Slip on the disturbingly realistic mask over your face and your transformation will be complete.

Buying a premade mask is the easiest option. However, if you’ve always wondered how these masks get made, and if you’re ready to make one yourself, follow the steps outlined in this video. To create a Leatherface mask that resembles true human skin, you will only need liquid latex, toilet paper, paint, and some jute. It’s pretty straightforward and looks incredibly realistic!

Grab your chainsaw, put on your leather face, and get ready to wreak some havoc this Halloween with this Leatherface costume!
