Monkey D Luffy's Outfits in Netflix's One Piece

Monkey D Luffy’s Outfits in Netflix’s One Piece

2020 was a tough year all round, especially for fans of Eiichiro Oda’s manga series One Piece, who would have a nerve-wrecking three year wait for Netflix’s live-action adaptation to actually hit the streaming platform. But it turns out the eagerly anticipated fantasy adventure didn’t let them down. Staying true to the source material, and bringing us lead star Iñaki Godoy in Monkey D. Luffy’s recognizable One Piece outfits.

Official trailer for Netflix’s live-action fantasy adventure series One Piece.

The epic adventure following young Luffy and his crew of Straw Hat Pirates, in an alternative version of Earth, is full of cut-throat villains, epic seafaring adventures and the search for Gold Roger’s mythical treasure the “One Piece.” Luffy’s dream to find the treasure and become the King of the Pirates, along with his zealous optimism might be what the show is all about. But it wouldn’t be anything without loyal friends and the One Piece Netflix outfits, Monkey D. Luffy is so well known for.

Aspiring pirate Luffy had a difficult up-bringing and most of the clothes he wears are second hand treasures that he has found on his travels. One Piece, Netflix.

With over 25 years of the One Piece manga series Monkey D. Luffy’s look is iconic, with a big part of that being this outfit. His most recognizable look and one that he is rarely seen without. Something that costume designer Diana Cilliers worked hard to get right for the Netflix live-action adaptation. Starting with his deep red vest, that he wears with nothing underneath. The durable, heavy cotton/linen mix, hand-me-down 3 button vest, has seen it all and has its own scuffs and worn through battle scars, just like its new owner.

After eating a mysterious devil fruit, named the Gum Gum fruit, Luffy gained the ability to make his body like rubber. Both a curse and gift, although it does come in handy when he finds himself in a fight or two. One Piece, Netflix.

If Pirates of the Carribeans, Will Turner has taught us anything, it is that every wannabe prospective Pirate needs to be ready to fight the enemy at the drop of a hat. And the ruthless alternative One Piece Earth, of Luffy and his crew, going through a “Golden Age of Pirates” is no different.

But where Will Turner was dressed exactly as you would expect for a swashbuckling blacksmith, Monkey D. Luffy’s outfits are the treasures he’s found along the way. Scuffed, worn and frayed, just like his dark blue denim capri pants with their ragged hem, and bit of rope as a belt.

The Straw Hat: Luffy’s Most Prized Possession in One Piece

Captain Monkey D. Luffy decides to name his crew The Straw Hat Pirates after his most prized, and worn, possession. One Piece, Netflix.

While the One Piece Netflix outfits of Monkey D. Luffy are recognizable on their own, an important part of the young and eternally optimistic pirate’s look is his straw hat. Lent to him by talented swordsmen and one time apprentice of Gold Roger, Shanks was our hero’s childhood idol and inspiration. Yet the simple brimmed straw hat, with leather strap and adorned by a red ribbon became more than just a gift from a role-model when it became the symbol of Luffy’s own crew, The Straw Hat Pirates.

The Straw Hat Pirates are not the only ones searching for the “One Piece” mythical treasure of Gold Roger, making their journey as treacherous as it is an epic adventure. Netflix

Oddly one of the highlights of Luffy’s One Piece wardrobe is the lack of clothes that he has, and the simplicity of all the outfits that he does wear. With many animation, or manga, characters rarely being sketched regularly in different clothes, our potential King of the Pirates adds a simple crew neck t-shirt to his One Piece looks. Grubby and dirty, like much of what he wears, the off-white and red t-shirt is still relaxed and uncomplicated just like the young pirate himself.

Iñaki Godoy, is the perfect embodiment of the character of Monkey D. Luffy, with even One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda agreeing “That’s Luffy” when he saw his audition tape. Netflix.

Just like the slightly unusual Monkey D. Luffy outfit from the manga series featuring his flower patterned button-up shirt, the One Piece live-action Netflix adaptation also interpreted the look for Luffy’s wardrobe. A departure from his usual red vest or simple t-shirts, the black shirt with bold flower and leaf patterns in yellow, burgundy and green sticks to his casual and relaxed style. Even if it is not very pirate-like.

The print might not be exactly the same but if you’ve seen  the One Piece manga series, you might remember seeing animated Luffy wearing a rather fetching flower patterned shirt too.

With his rag-tag crew of pirates, and zealous optimism, Monkey D. Luffy’s dreams of becoming King of the Pirates is within reach. Unless of course one of his crew isn’t being honest about their intentions. One Piece, Netflix

If you have found yourself drawn to Monkey D. Luffy’s simple and relaxed garments along with his use of the color red, which makes up the main portion of his wardrobe, then this outfit won’t disappoint either. Although this time he has used the bright red color for a basic short-sleeved hooded t-shirt, while adding the staple of any casual and very relaxed look, denim overalls.

Monkey D. Luffy isn’t just the Captain of The Straw Pirates, endless optimist, dream chaser and snazzy dresser, he is the glue that holds everything together. Especially when his friends lose their way and are in need of guidance and help. But even though the One Piece Netflix outfits of Monkey D. Luffy are just as iconic as Eiichiro Oda’s original manga, they probably won’t be the main reason that the live-action Netflix smash-hit will be remembered.

But can the same be said about the wardrobe of fiercely independent thief Nami? You will have to click here to find out.
