Disney has given us some great villains over the years, so if this Halloween you are looking for costume inspiration from Disney’s list of evil-doers then why not try out a Dr Facilier costume. The popular villain, also known as The Shadow Man, was the work of animation supervisor Bruce W. Smith who has been employed at Disney as a character animator for many years.
When we are first introduced to Dr Facilier, the voodoo witch doctor is being every bit the devious trickster that he is. Conning and manipulating people into making deals that will ultimately backfire on them in ways they could never imagine. But such is the trickster’s skill, he always gives people exactly what they want. It isn’t his problem if exactly what they say, isn’t quite what they imagined.
How to get the Dr. Facilier Look?
Our smooth talking charismatic witch doctor is a villain with a bit of fashion taste though. So start your Dr Facilier costume with a burgundy tailcoat Victorian style suit. Use the trousers and jacket but substitute the burgundy waistcoat for one in purple. Don’t bother with a shirt instead just wearing the waistcoat under the jacket to get a more authentic look for Dr Facilier.
Add a deep red cummberbund to the waistline of your trousers and a pair of brown leather formal shoes. A pair of brown and cream brogues would be even better, but don’t get too stuck on the minor color details. The tailcoat suit, waistcoat and dress shoes will give off the air of suave sophistication needed for this tricky evil-doer.
Dr Facilier’s Accessories and Make-up
The accessories to complete the Dr Facilier costume are just as important. In particular his black top hat. If you can’t get an official movie version then you could cobble together your own. As long as you can find a black top hat you can attach all the other accompaniments on it yourself. Wrap the base with some red satin ribbon, a similar color to the cummerbund, tuck in to the left side of the ribbon a long purple feather and attach a skull and crossbones patch on the front.
Finish the look with a black walking cane. Dr Faciliers has a purple crystal ball on the top of his but a bit of purple paint could easily turn any cane into something suitable for a voodoo witch doctor. Add his fang necklace, and lastly grab a couple of tarot cards out of a deck so you can read your victims future.
Our villain’s goal is to rule New Orleans, with a little help from his friends on the other side. Remember The Shadow Man isn’t just a fancy nickname, our witch doctor’s shadow can move independently and interact with him so he always knows what’s going on.
So when you put on your Dr Facilier costume make sure to be on the lookout for people who are easy targets for your trickster cons.
